I quite enjoyed the plot and the though I was well filmed, mostly. The cast was pretty good on the whole but the biggest distraction was the miscasting of the lead character.
The film had potential to be a hybrid of HEAT and Training Day but the acting by Butler of troubled lead character was nothing short of dreadful. It was cliched to the point of amateurish.
He was so poor he even made 50 Cent look passable. His wooden portrait made his scenes drag on and on.
That said, the rest of the cast, 50 Cent included, contributed well and made the plot and action pretty decent. It does remind me of HEAT and that was a good thing. The lead character reminded me of Training Day and that would have been a good thing if it was not for the miscasting.
Hopefully the squeal will feature less of Butler.

Den of Thieves is an obvious remake of the 1995 Pacino/De Niro film Heat, complete with a bank robbery, a spectacular shoot-out in LA, focus on personal lives, and a final confrontation between the hero and the villain. Den even copied a few lines right out of Heat. That this film is an unofficial remake of Heat shouldn"t discourage you from watching it. It"s actually quite good.
Den of Thieves improves on parts where Heat fell short. Although Heat did have two superstars and an awesome shoot-out scene, the script was weak and the film dragged at times. Den does a better job of integrating personal life with the cops-and-robbers life. The script is better, the dialogue is more natural and the chemistry among the actors is better. And Den holds its own in the action department. Den does have a glaring plot hole created by the inadequate explanation of how one robber managed to regain the leader"s trust so easily after being interrogated by the police. But despite this, in many ways Den is an improvement over Heat.

Just watched this on DVD yesterday, i will say being a military member myself, there is no way those cops could handle them tactically or their intel. It"s the difference between Soldiers and cops. Our instincts and intelligence is way far advanced. the cops won that because Geraud Butler was the star of them movie. They know nothing of sustain suppression, ask the Army,Marines and Seals about that.
